This six-week Beginning Meditation class series, as taught at Portland Friends of the Dhamma, introduces the participants to insight meditation (vipassana) and the practice of mindfulness as practiced in the Thai Forest Monastery tradition of Ajahn Chah. The class meets on Mondays between February 4th and March 10th, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM.
Each class consists of one or two periods of guided meditation, a check-in, and a discussion of a variety of topics that help us understand what insight meditation is and how to practice it. Other forms of mindfulness meditation practice are introduced as well, including walking and eating meditation.
Participants are strongly encouraged to establish a regular sitting meditation practice at home.
There is no advance registration; please come to the first evening if interested. This is not a drop-in class. If a participant cannot come to the first class, the latest time to start is the second class (Feb. 11th). There will also be future Beginning Meditation classes at Portland Friends of the Dhamma.
Portland Friends of the Dhamma is supported by the generosity of its members, friends and anyone so inspired. We never charge a fee for any events taking place at our facility. Our doors remain open because of the voluntary contributions of time, effort and/or financial (tax deductible) donations of participants. Please do not hesitate to come whatever your financial situation may be. Any means of contribution are deeply appreciated including graciously accepting this gift of Dhamma, books for our lending library and/or financial support.
