Etiquette when Monastics are Present
When attending any event with a monastic in the lead we follow guidelines that specifically support their vows and encourage a calm environment.
Clothing is to be loose-fitting and modest. Please cover your shoulders and knees. Those living on the Five Precepts are encouraged to wear black pants and white shirts/sweaters.
- Noble silence begins as you enter the shrine room.
- Remove shoes when you enter, either upstairs or down.
- Always keep valuables with you.
- Meals are always potluck. Drop your food in the kitchen (downstairs) before the day begins.
- Be seated in the shrine room before the first bell has rung (all doors lock before the first meditation begins).
- When sitting, please do not point your feet at either the shrine or the monastics.
- Do not lie down anywhere in the meditation hall (medical exceptions considered).
- You may leave or use the restrooms at any time EXCEPT during silent meditation or Dhamma talk.
- At the end of the event put away your cushions and remove any items you brought with you.
- When addressing a monastic, it is polite to put your hands together in front of your chest (Anjali).
